What is Panchakarma? A complete guide to Ayurveda's deepest detox
Dr. Meera Sharma, BAMS10 Aug 2026 7 min read
Panchakarma literally means five actions. It is a supervised series of therapies that prepare the body, remove accumulated toxins and then rebuild strength. A genuine program runs 7 to 21 days under a physician, with a personalised diet and daily monitoring.
Unlike a massage retreat, Panchakarma begins with an assessment of your constitution and current imbalances. The doctor selects only the procedures that suit you. Nobody should receive all five actions in one program.
The three phases
Purvakarma is the preparation phase. Medicated oils and gentle heat therapies loosen deep-seated toxins and move them toward the digestive tract.
Pradhanakarma is the main cleansing phase. Depending on your condition the physician may use therapeutic emesis, purgation, medicated enemas or nasal therapies.
Paschatkarma is the rebuilding phase. A graded diet, herbal support and rest help the digestive fire recover and lock in the benefits.
Who benefits most
Panchakarma is commonly recommended for lifestyle and metabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, for chronic joint and skin conditions, and for stress-related disorders like insomnia and anxiety.
It is not suitable during pregnancy, acute infections or severe weakness. This is why a medical consultation always comes first at every verified Sehat Planet centre.
